About Us

The Airline Zone is the foremost authority on airline economics.  Our experts are the most frequently quoted in the press and relied upon by industry insiders.

The purpose of the Airline Zone is to investigate airline economics at low levels of geography:  namely at airports and at the route level.  It does not require much thought to realize that all competition is at the route level and therefore all pricing is set at that level as well.  With this a framework, then everything else falls into place. Airline economics is all about which plane you choose, which cities it files to and the fares it is able to charge.  Who does it compete with on these routes and how does this affect the fare level?

The city pair chosen to fly and the plane it uses to fly that route determine both the costs and the revenue stream.

Once a decision is made about the plane and the cities, then the costs fall into place as this dictates wages and employment numbers. All staffing is derived from the schedule.  The schedule is one of those areas in airline economics that is a great black hole in that few understand it. To make matters worse, there are few ways to measure the effectiveness of the schedule and to compare schedules efficiency between airlines.  Over time, we will introduce metrics to measure these complex areas.
